If you’re planning to stay in Hungary after graduation, but aren’t sure where to start (I got you, babe 😌), I’m here to help guide you! If you find this information useful, please share it with others who might be facing the same challenge.
First of all, here are the docs that you need to prepare:
Where can I get an application form for job searching & residence permit?
You can download here Click here or you can find the hard copy at the immigration office.
Where to get a certificate of registration?
Office Address: 1082 Budapest, Kisfaludy utca 11
When visiting the Labour Office, please make sure you have all the following documents with you:
- Passport.
- Current Residence Permit Card.
- Certification in Hungarian of completion of your study (diploma).
- Address card.
How to get an Address Card?
(In case you change a new address, if not you can use the old one).
You can obtain the form at the immigration office. Fill it out, and ensure it includes your landlord’s signature. Also, bring a copy of your accommodation contract when you visit.
Note: Please double-check that the signatures on both your contract and form are consistent.
An officer will give you an oral request form — fill it out and submit it. If you’re lucky, you might receive your certificate the same day; otherwise, it may take a few days.
Is it necessary to have Health insurance?
It can be both Yes and No 😂 — it really depends on the officer. From my experience, one officer stressed, ‘It’s very important, so please have it!’ But in my friend’s case, the officer told her, ‘No need; you can just state on the application form that you have enough money in your bank account to cover it even if you haven’t bought one.’ So, luck plays a big role here.
If I were in your shoes, I’d look into health insurance options. I know of two companies: Generali and SwissCare. You can also browse online to find the best fit for your needs.”
***For me, I decided to buy SwissCare the cheap one as I need it just for an attachment and I can buy it online.
When & Where to submit an application form?
You may submit your application up to 15 days before your current residence permit expires. You also have the option to submit it online or offline. Personally, I chose to apply offline, as it allowed me to ask questions directly and address any missing documents on the spot with an officer.
Note: there are two immigration offices, so double-check to ensure you’re visiting the correct one. 😉
- Budapest, Szegedi út 37, 1135 (For student only).
- Budapest, Budafoki út 60, 1117. National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (your destination is here).
Note: It’s a good idea to bring snacks, water, a power bank, and charger, AirPods or headphones, a book, etc. (If you’re short on time, don’t worry — there are a few shops nearby.) Be prepared, though; this process can take forever! 😂
How long does it take to get the (plastic) card?
I’d say it’s ‘depends on your luck’ all over again! 😅
Case 1: My friend and I submitted our applications at the same time, but she received her plastic card first.
Case 2: Another friend submitted her application later than I did, but somehow got her card before me.
When I asked an officer about it, she just said, ‘It’s complicated; it’s in progress — just be patient.’ For me, it took around 4 months: I submitted it in July and finally got my card in November. Not too bad, right? 😂
